Schools will shortly be receiving a poster and leaflets for parents outlining the importance of physical education, school sport and physical activity. The Association for Physical Education (AfPE) has been commissioned by Sport England to produce these complimentary resources as part of the implementation recommendations from several recent national strategies.
The poster for schools highlights the difference that physical education can make to the pupils in schools including being productive, enterprising, successful, vibrant, inspired, positive and outstanding.
The leaflet for parents outlines why it is so vital for children and young people to be active. It outlines the skills that children can develop through sport and physical activity and defines what is meant by school sport and physical activity. It also gives parents ideas on how to help their children to experience the benefits of school sport and physical activity which include being a positive role model, offering encouragement for participation, discussing progress with teachers and providing children with the appropriate kit.
The leaflet highlights the five reasons why children and young people need regular physical education, school sport and physical education:
Achievement: Pupils improve in all subjects.
Personal development: Pupils are more confident and positive.
Social Skills: Pupils have more developed social skills.
Health and emotional wellbeing: Pupils have a better outlook on life.
Leadership: Pupils will be able to make informed decisions.
